Born in Warsaw Poland 25 August 1982

Agata started vaulting at the age of 10 in Warsaw. From 1989 to 1994 she competed in Rhythmic Gymnastics. In 1993 she started vaulting and between 1997 and 2000 she was a member of the Polish National Mixed Team.
When she left university she started work as a vaulting coach. In 2003 she began coaching vaulting at the KJ Aromer Vaulting Club and continued there until 2004: during that period the club’s vaulters won the Polish National Team and Individual Vaulting Championships every year.

Agata coached in South Africa from March 2005 — September 2007. She coached and successfully qualified six of South Africa’s vaulters for the World Equestrian Games.

She succeeded in preparing and taking the mixed team to the World Equestrian Games in 2006, where they came 13th; in 2007 they came 9th in the European Championship.

She also made a very big contribution to development vaulting, and also (with the support of Riba Stables, which loaned horses and equipment) coached teams from Soweto, Malawi, Swaziland and Mauritius — she coached seven of the eight teams that competed in the Inter-Africa Cup in April 2007. She also helped to start a vaulting team in Zambia. We were extremely fortunate to have a coach of this calibre in South Africa.

Roland Boehlen
My name is Roland Boehlen. I am an FEI vaulting judge, and also give seminars for judges, run coaches’ courses, and I am responsible for the vaulting discipline in my home country of Switzerland.

My involvement in vaulting began almost by accident. I was competing in show-jumping at regional level, and some of us found a suitable horse and began practising gymnastic exercises on horseback as a kind of cross-training. Next thing we (a group of adult — all but one, men) were giving demonstrations during the breaks at shows.

Then children began to join us, and our team became a children’s team, with me as the club chairman. I bought the book Vaulting Made Easy and began to learn about the vaulting discipline. I and four other Swiss delegates then attended a seminar for trainers, run by Paul and Illa Lorenz in Tailfingen (Germany), and this was followed by the appointment of judges and trainers responsible for the development of vaulting in Switzerland.
I remember that, in discussions about the international development of vaulting around this time, I argued for the abolishment of the age limit for vaulters, the introduction of individual vaulting, marking of horse and longeur, and a weight limit for team vaulting. Paul Lorenz described me as ‘the crazy Swiss’. However, with the support of other nations, my ideas slowly became accepted, and all my suggestions except for the weight limit have been incorporated into the rules.

In 1976 the Swiss Vaulting Association was founded, with Ewald Gebs as its first president. I was the official responsible for the rules and regulations. I also qualified as a national, then an international judge. With this I stopped vaulting, and also, as an active judge, was required by the regulations of the time to give up being a trainer.

In 1984 I judged my first important event — the European Championships in Ebreichsdorf (Austria). Since then I have judged very many international competitions and championships, and have also been involved in organising international competitions. Over the years I have run seminars for judges and trainers in many countries: Switzerland, of course, and also France, England, the USA, Italy, Poland, and, most recently, South Africa. I always enjoy meeting new people and making new friends in the countries. I am keen to help vaulting get established in new places, which will only happen if experts make themselves available to help vaulting develop in countries where it is a new discipline.
Roland - International Judge SA Championships Cape Town 2005
I am now the head of vaulting in Switzerland and also the president of the Swiss Vaulting Association. For the past three years I have been an official FEI international judge. I also serve as chef d’équipe for the Swiss team for important competitions.

I live on a small farm and have three horses, which I ride, and in winter I work as a skiing instructor. Horses and skiing were always hobbies when I worked as a chemist, but I am now retired and have more time for my hobbies — including vaulting and supporting new vaulting nations. I have made myself available to the FEI development programme, though which I hope to be able to help develop vaulting in other countries.

My name is Renske Burghout and I’m a vaulter from the Netherlands. Early 2006 I was lucky enough to visit the vaulting team at Riba stables twice. I was living in Bloemfontein during that period so I was delighted to go to Johannesburg and meet up with people that share the same hobby. Both times were amazing. We had loads of fun and got along really well. I felt like I was part of the family, even though I just visited for a couple of days. At the WEG in   Aachen we met up again and it was great to see everyone vaulting their best.
I started vaulting back home when I was 4 years old and stopped last year. As a kid I also quit vaulting for some time because I kept fracturing my wrist. I have always enjoyed being in a vaulting team and travelling to other countries for competitions. The last ten years I’ve also been training one of the junior teams in our vaulting club. Some of the kids I trained ended up vaulting with me in the same team! At the moment I live in Ireland to pursue my other great dream; to become a professional dancer. So unfortunately there’s no vaulting in my life and I really miss it. Being part of a vaulting team is very special.
!
My time in South Africa was good. It was even better to get to visit vaulters – I absolutely loved it! I also went to Kimberley twice to help out the vaulters there for a day. They were very friendly and lovely people too. The vaulting world is very small, so it’s great to meet people from all over the world. Thank you so much Barbie, Agata and Kelly for making me feel at home in South Africa and I hope to meet you again some day
Ulrike is one of SA vaulting's greatest friends and benefactors. In 2002 vaulting barely existed in SA: then Ulrike visited all the provinces and gave clinics. Her enthusiasm and encouragement was the spark that set South African vaulting alight. Two years later she made it possible for us to send a vaulter to the World Vaulting Championships as a 'wild-card' entry. This encouraged us to believe that we could compete internationally, and in 2006 SA sent its first vaulting team and five individual vaulters to WEG in Aachen. Thanks to Ulrike's encouragement, vaulting in SA - and in group IX countries of Africa - is a fast-growing discipline.
Ulrike's involvement with vaulting goes back to 1962, when she herself was a team vaulter.

Award of the German Order of Merit for Ulrike Rieder for long-standing volunteer work in the sport of vaulting.

by Christina Dinné
Georg Wacker, member of the Parliament and Secretary of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Culture, Youth and Sport could hardly have dreamed that he'd be traveling to the Lutheran Academy in Bad Boll on a Friday evening. However, an occasion presented itself that allowed the often busy politician to work some overtime on February 15th, 2008.

Ulrike Rieder, international vaulting expert and co-founder of the association "Vaulting Circle" (Voltigierzirkel) from Gaiberg near Heidelberg / Germany was recommended for the German Order of Merit award and is to be honored in the course of the International Vaulting Congress. Wacker couldn't have chosen a better place to give the award, because this is where Ulrike Rieder in 1995 brought the first Vaulting Symposium to life, that since has attracted trainers, instructors, participants and judges from all over the world. Like no other, Ulrike Rieder has shaped and advanced the sport of vaulting, set standards and promoted international development work. As an author she has collaborated on various rule books, worked on guidelines, instructional books for children and definitive texts, supervised instructional films and contributed her expertise to large-scale events. As a seminar leader and consultant she has visited and tought in many countries - in Europe and overseas, including Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, Norway, Italy, Sweden, Russia, Canada, USA (in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Texas), Australia, Malaysia, Argentina, Brasil, Ecuador, Columbia and South Africa. Her aim is to spread the sport of vaulting worldwide. She supported many clubs, coaches to develop a vaulting program in their country.

Aside from all that she has learned vaulting from the ground up – at the age of 10 she started as a team member in the Heilbronn Vaulting Club. In 1963 she took part in the first German Vaulting-Championships in Wiesbaden and was part of the bronze medal winning team. She has the highest German trainer qualification (Trainer A), is also a holder of the the International Trainer Certification and an international official FEI judge. One of her greatest achievements, however, was the founding and development of the only interest- and promotional association for the vaulting sport – the "Vaulting Circle Association" (Voltigierzirkel) – which is internationally active and today numbers over 2000 members.

For 15 years she was first Chair of the Association and publisher of the magazine "Current Vaulting Circle" (Aktuelle Voltigierzirkel), as well as the hub of the worldwide vaulting network. In July 2007 she relinquished this position and is since that time the Honorary Chair.

As an academic she has consistently encouraged students to author high school papers, seminar works and doctoral dissertations on the vaulting sport and has subsequently archived them. In this way a considerable library has been amassed that contains much valuable information.

She has chronicled the history of vaulting with contemporary accounts in a traveling exhibit that could be seen at diverse vaulting events such at the World Championship in Mannheim 2000 and in the German Horse Museum in Verden, most recently at the Eurocheval equestrian trade show in Offenburg.

The mother of three lives in Gaiberg with her husband – Professor Emeritus of Sport Science at Heidelberg University, Hermann Rieder – and is thrilled over this high honor which she considers also as great appreciation of the whole vaulting sport worldwide. The entire vaulting community is thrilled along with her!

Gaiberg, 1.2.2008
Im Christina, Im 20 years old and Im from Germany. Ive been here in South Africa since the 30th of October 2007 and I leave at the end of April 2008.

Before this year I finished school and I didnt really know what to do so I decided to take a break and leave Germany. I came to South Africa because somebody told me I could stay in Durban and I could combine it with teaching my favourite sport: vaulting.
Enter your text here...So I took my chance, booked my flight and 3 weeks later I arrived in Durban. Now the time is nearly over and Im looking forward to seeing my familiy, all my friends and my horse in Germany, but I know Ill definitly come back to this beautiful country.

Ive learnt a lot here and I have gained a lot of interesting experiences. I have been vaulting for 12 years and for 3 years my team has been an a-grade-team. I started teaching when I was 14. Ive taught everything from the little beginning kids to the highest level.

When I go back to Germany I hope I can use all the new experiences I learnt here.

I have really enjoyed my stay here and Im gonna miss this life.
I was born in Germany and lived near Flensburg until I came to work in South Africa. I started vaulting when I was 4 years old in a playgroup, and progressed from F-grade to D-grade over the years. In 1998 I moved to a new club and began vaulting C-grade, and in 2002 I joined an A-grade mixed team, with which I competed twice in the German National Championships.

I finished school in 2003 and started working, and for the next three years I didn’t have time to vault. Then, at the age of 19, I was able to start vaulting again, as a member of a B-grade mixed team. We had many difficulties over the next two years, unable to find a strong horse of the right size, and then the riding club closed.

So I decided to take a break from vaulting again, and to go to Africa to instruct, learn English, and travel a bit. I arrived here on the 23rd of August 2007 and will leave on the 30th of June 2008. I spent most of my time at Riba Stables in Kyalami (Gauteng), but I also got the chance to visit other countries. I helped for 1½ months in Swaziland, which is a really nice country with hills and beautiful animals. And I went for 2 months to Zambia, with its really beautiful bush-areas and rivers and waterfalls.

I loved to see more of Africa and liked to help and had fun working with the kids. I will never forget my time here in Riba Stables and the other countries. I felt at home and welcome everywhere I went.
