CVI** International Vaulting Competition, Šal’a (Slovakia), 2-3 June 2007
South African vaulting is gradually building up a group of vaulters with international experience, and more and more of these are beginning to achieve the scores necessary to qualify for the big championships. This is largely owing to international vaulters who have come to South Africa to coach, especially Agata Pekala of Poland, who has been coaching at Riba Stables for over two years.
The target this year is to qualify for the European Championships in August 2007: in order to do so, a vaulter has to have achieved a score of at least 6.0 in the first round (comprising a compulsory and a freestyle test) of a CVI competition or higher since January 2006.
Six South African vaulters competed at the CVI** International Vaulting Competition held at Šal’a in Slovakia on the weekend of 2 to 3 June.
Jasyn Gertenbach (17), Kegan Smith (20) and Kayla Gertenbach (15) had previously qualified for the European Championships, so their participation in this competition was for experience and practice. Lauryn Lewthwaite (19), Kenhardt de Vry (17) and Yorrik Smith (18) were attempting to qualify for the European Champs, and Lauryn and Kenhardt both achieved this.
All the vaulters bettered or equalled their best previous scores at CVI Competitions, but Jasyn in particular had an especially good show: Jasyn was the first South African vaulter ever to score better than 7.0 in international competition and at Šal’a he became the first South African vaulter to achieve a final score above 7.0, and was placed 8th overall, behind some of the world’s top vaulters.
